Uzbekistan: Green Solution

by Shirin Shukhratova | 18-10-2021 16:53 recommendations 0

With the development of technology, more and more attention is being paid to the environmentally friendly disposal of waste, because waste can and should be used properly. Today, recycling plastic, metal and even horse manure helps not only to solve the problems of human settlements but also to use waste as fuel for energy production.   For example, one ton of municipal solid waste for energy production can replace one ton of lignite or 250 litres of oil.
In this report, I would like to focus on recycling specifically in Uzbekistan, my home country, as ecology has recently become one of the most pressing topics. Every year, Uzbekistan produces 9 million tons of solid waste, but only 9% is recycled.
Recently, the only sorting line in the city has been operating in Tashkent (the capital of Uzbekistan), passing through 100 tons of waste per day. The installation of the line is a pilot project by Eco World, an initiative of the government to provide employment for homeless people. According to employees of the plant, the equipment is capable of processing up to 650 tons of paper per day. Waste paper allows the production of a whole list of quality goods, but in Uzbekistan, it is mainly a raw material for the production of packaging and toilet paper.
At the initiative of the president, several bills have been signed aimed at bringing the level of coverage of household waste collection and removal services to 100% by the end of 2021.

Hello Shirin, this is your mentor Joon.

Good to hear the advancement in recycling infrastructure. By employing homeless
people, government would be able to solve two problems at once. Even though
most government officials are now aware that recycling has positive effect on environment,
they tend to ignore it due to the cost it takes to implement it to social system.
However, due to different restrictions such as carbon tax tariff, countries are now
getting interested towards it. I think it is a progression to correct direction, and hope
more countries head towards same direction.

Hope you are doing well, and let's keep up!

    Yours,

    Joon
