Lets Recycle
- An article by Madhav Datt
In this series of articles by me to motivate small scale youth environmentalists and inspire other to take up such initiatives, this one is reporting about a project started in my own city (Faridabad, India) and is by a small group of members of Green the Gene from here.
Our Project 'The Waste Management program' is an Initiative taken up by the members of Green the Gene to recycle and reuse the waste of the school and neighboring societies. Our Project goal is to Recycle the waste so that there is less wastage and reduce Pollution. We are trying to increase awareness of students as well. We had executed this plan two Year ago by segregation of waste, recycling and reusing it. We have achieved really good results, as now there is a lot of waste recycled and reused and there is less wastage now in our Area.
Our project is about recycling the waste generated by students in our schools, by using the concept of the 3 R's which is Reuse, Reduce, Recycle. We are trying to use that waste to the best possible, by segregating it, making compost out of the bio-degradable food waste. Newspapers and non-biodegradable waste, is recycled. This waste, earlier used to litter, choke drains or be burnt, does no longer pollute the environment, but is used in a constructive way. This project was started by us in 2008, in Eicher School Faridabad, and we have been working on it, ever since.
The desired situation, which would make our project successful is when people are very much aware about the situation and are responsible as well as willing to change for a cause. We want that with the help of our initiative the whole locality is benefited. The waste is properly disposed, and recycled and reduced to the least possible amount. Everyone is inculcated and follows the philosophy of the three R s. Our localities and the area surrounding our school are now almost free from litter. The canal is no longer dumped into. The newspapers, metal pieces etc. are recycled.

We held workshops to make the students aware about this and to follow the procedure. This campaign involves recycling of paper, exam sheets, old newspapers, food-waste etc. At school in each Class, two types of dustbins are installed for the disposal of waste. One red dustbin which is for Non Bio-degradable waste and the second green one which is for Bio-degradable waste. The waste of the green dustbin and Red dustbins from all over the school is collected in separate containers. The Bio degradable waste is then decomposed to make manure that can be used for the plants in the school and the surroundings which are planted by Green the Gene. The Non Bio-degradable waste is further separated according to the criteria of being recyclable waste or non recyclable waste. The recyclable products generally contain metal, newspapers etc. which is sent to the Recycle Company (and local recyclers – kabadis) for recycling and reusing them, working on the idea of thinking globally and acting locally. The remaining waste which mainly consists of a little amount of plastics which comes as a packaging of newspapers, distributed in the school. So the plastic is given to the Municipal Corporation, Faridabad for recycling.
Our Project visions and targets are to increase our project to a city level so that there is less pollution and waste of the resources as if we reuse and recycle the waste then there will be less consumption of the resources and we will be able to save some resources for our future generations. Other than this we will be able to reduce a large amount of pollution from our city reducing the average carbons footprints of the city and making it more eco friendly. By this project we will be reducing a lot of energy as we recycle and reuse the waste so the consumers energy is saved. We measure our success by the reduce in pollution in the surrounding and the reuse of more and more waste in form of the resources. Eicher School is involved in supporting us as they give us the platform to increase our project to this level at which it is today. The Project has been running from One year and today we see less polluted canal, less polluted air and soil. There is a lot of increase in recycled waste that gives our project a good platform to increase it.
